Mapping group names to codes

Observations for nominal and ordinal scale data can be entered as group names, e.g. Male & Female, or as numeric codes, e.g. 1 & 2. Numeric codes are often used for brevity and for quick data entry, but their meaning can be difficult to interpret and remember.

To aid comprehension codes can be mapped to group names. Analyse-it will then refer to groups by name, rather than numeric code, wherever possible.

To set the mapping between codes and group names:

  1. Select a cell in the range of the data of the variable to modify.
  2. Click Variable on the Analyse-it tab/toolbar to show the Variable properties dialog box.
  3. Ensure Measurement scale is set to Nominal or Ordinal.
  4. In the Categories list assign group names to the numeric codes identified in the data for the variable.
  5. Click OK.
