Grouping variables in a List dataset

The standard list dataset uses a single row for the names of the variables in the dataset. In more complex experiments you can use two rows to convey the structure and grouping of the variables.

EXAMPLE  The list dataset below contains 5 variables: ID, Sex, Drug and Weight with repeat measures Before and After. The names of the variables are placed in the first row above the data, except for Weight which is placed in the cell above the first repeat measure Before.

When the dataset is arranged on the Excel worksheet the next step is to define the range as a dataset.

To define the dataset:

  1. Select a cell in the range containing the dataset.
  2. Click Define Dataset on the Analyse-it tab/toolbar to show the Define Dataset wizard.
  3. Click Next>.
  4. Click List for the layout.
  5. Click Next>.
  6. Set Header rows to 2 to indicate two rows (called the headers) are used.
  7. Tick Apply Autoformat to apply cell formatting to the dataset to indicate the cells Analyse-it assumes contain variable names and the cells it assumes contain data. Clear the checkbox to leave your own formatting intact.
  8. Click Next>.
  9. Click Finish to close the Define Dataset wizard.
