A value assigned to an observation indicating it's position, relative to 1, of an observation in the list of sorted observations for a sample. Tied observations with the same value as usually assigned the average of the ranks they would otherwise be assigned if different.
Non-parametric statistical procedures are generally based on the ranks of the observations.
